My impression is that to date US policy has failed to take account of the fact that the people there need basic economic help and physical safety.
Going in now and then to drive out the "bad guys" while wreaking havoc with the lives of civilians somehow has failed to "win hearts and minds." Go figure.

Rebuilding Afghanistan will certainly to be tough go. It would stand a better chance if we knew exactly why we are there in the first place.
